Chinese Drywall
Drywall from China was imported and used in homes constructed in: Florida from 2001-2009. Drywall material (substrate) was compromised by weather, environment and circumstances ie: hurricanes of 2004-2005. Due to delays in unloading cargo ships, wallboard became moisture-laden, creating conditions where sulfur levels in Gypsum material produced Elemental Sulfur . Elemental sulfur in excessive amounts are out-gassed by defective boards and the chemical reaction contaminates the indoor air and causes metal (copper) corrosion.
This effect is ongoing. Compromised wallboard continues to build up elemental sulfur and higher amounts of H2s out-gassing. HVAC systems re-circulate the H2s mixed in with the indoor air.Constant circulation of H2s by HVAC system causes copper cooling coils to turn black and eventually causes system failure. Many of the homes with defective drywall are first realized when the HVAC system fails and an A/C technician tells customer that coils are showing signs of corrosion.
