Chinese Drywall
From 2001 to 2009, imported Chinese drywall was used to construct Florida homes. These drywall materials (substrates) were compromised by weather and environmental circumstances, i.e., the hurricanes of 2004 and 2005. Due to delays in unloading cargo ships, much of the wallboard became moisture-laden, creating conditions where sulfur levels in the gypsum material produced elemental sulfur. Unfortunately, excessive amounts of elemental sulfur are outgassed by defective boards, and the resulting chemical reaction contaminates indoor air and results in metal (copper) corrosion.
This effect is ongoing. Compromised wallboard continues to amass elemental sulfur, resulting in higher levels of H2 outgassing. HVAC systems then recirculate this H2, mixing it with the indoor air. Constant H2 circulation by HVAC systems causes copper cooling coils to blacken, eventually leading to system failure.
Many property owners with this defective drywall are only made aware of the situation when their HVAC systems fail and the AC technician mentions corroded coils. However, there are other health issues and warning signs related to this issue, including headaches, upper respiratory illnesses, nose bleeds, rashes, and burning eyes.
Prioritize your health by scheduling an appointment to test your commercial or residential air quality. And don't forget we also offer mold testing services.
